Best Time to Visit Innsbruck

Innsbruck sits in the Inn valley in the Austrian Alps, with a mountain climate where conditions differ sharply between the valley floor and the alpine terrain above it. Winter (December to March) is the busiest and most expensive season with deep snow on the surrounding peaks; summer brings long daylight and warm hiking weather, while the between-seasons in spring and November see quiet valleys and closed high lifts. Here is when to go โ€” and when to think twice.

Best: January โ€“ March

Full ski season across the Olympia SkiWorld Innsbruck lift network, with free ski buses from the city and reliable snow โ€” but also busy, pricey weeks, especially around February's school holidays.

Second choice: June โ€“ September, or December

June to September brings warm weather for hiking, rafting and canyoning across the Tyrolean valleys, while December's Christmas markets around the Golden Roof offer a different, equally busy reason to visit.

Think twice: mid-April to May, and November

The between-seasons: many cable cars, mountain huts and high restaurants close for maintenance, and high trails can still be under snow or already snowed on again.

Month Weather Crowds Price Notes
January Cold, snowy above the city High High Full ski season across the Olympia SkiWorld Innsbruck lift network, with a Four Hills Tournament ski-jumping round at the Bergisel; book lodging and lifts well ahead
February Cold and often snowy Very high Very high School holidays push this into the busiest, priciest ski weeks of the year, with deep snow across the SkiWorld area
March Still wintry in the mountains, milder in the valley High High Ski season continues with softer snow and longer daylight; prices ease only slightly from February
April Mild in the valley, winter conditions persist above Medium Medium Ski season winds down through the month; from mid-April many cable cars and mountain huts close for maintenance as the between-season begins
May Mild and increasingly green in the valley, snow lingers on high trails Low Low One of the quietest, cheapest months: many lifts and huts stay closed for maintenance until the very end of the month, so check operating dates before planning a big mountain day
June Warm in town, cool and changeable at altitude Medium Medium Hiking season opens as the last snow clears from most high trails, though it can still be near freezing on the Seegrube on a warm town afternoon
July Warm and generally settled High High Peak season for hiking, via ferrata, rafting and paragliding, with the longest daylight of the year; book huts and popular trails ahead
August Warm, with the odd thunderstorm High High Still warm and busy, the classic month for the Stubai Glacier, canyoning in the ร–tztal and day trips to the Zillertal
September Cooling, generally settled Medium Medium Crowds and prices ease while high trails stay walkable, with the first snow possible on the highest peaks late in the month
October Cooling fast, more rain in the valley Low Low A quiet in-between month: most high-altitude hiking is over, ski season is still weeks away, and the Christmas markets have not yet opened
November Cold and often grey, first snow arriving Low Low The quietest month of the year: many cable cars, mountain huts and high restaurants close for maintenance, and ski season only opens near the end
December Cold, with snow settling in the valley Very high Very high The Christmas markets around the Golden Roof and Maria-Theresien-StraรŸe run from mid-November, making this the busiest and most expensive month of the year
